LOCKSS ("Lots of Copies Keep Stuff Safe"), Victoria
Reich. LOCKSS
is open source software that provides librarians with an easy and
inexpensive way to collect, store, preserve, and provide access to
their own, local copy of authorized content they purchase. Running on
standard desktop hardware and requiring almost no technical
administration, LOCKSS converts a personal computer into a digital
preservation appliance, creating low-cost, persistent, accessible
copies of e-journal content as it is published. Since pages in these
appliances are never flushed, the local community's access to that
content is safeguarded. Accuracy and completeness of LOCKSS appliances
is assured through a robust and secure, peer-to-peer polling and
reputation system. |
| 10:00 am - 10:35 am |
Building the EJournal Safety Net: UConn's LOCKSS
Experience, David Bretthauer. As UConn Libraries
has migrated to electronic-only journals where practical,
preservation has become paramount. This presentation will describe both
technical and collection development perspectives of firsthand
experience implementing and maintaining a LOCKSS cache, issues
for potential implementers to be aware of, and UConn's future with
LOCKSS. |

PubMed Central: NLM and NIH looking to the future, Donna
Berryman. In an effort to create a complete digital archive of

the scanned issues will be available free in PMC. |

JSTOR and New Trends in Electronic Journal Archiving,
Michael Spinella and Eileen Fenton. Preservation
continues to be an important focus for the scholarly community, and
maintaining a long-term archive that preserves both print and digital
formats is increasingly vital for academic research. This session will
describe the new strategies JSTOR and Ithaka's Electronic-Archiving
Initiative are using to implement and improve long-term archiving
solutions. |
